Buses, Cars and Parking Lots...

I remember the first day I went to Northeastern.  I rode in on bus 32.  That old faithful bus I have been acquainted with for years.  I also remember having to hang around late that afternoon to catch bus 32 back home.  I didn’t realize at the time that it ran double routes and was dropping off elementary school kids before it came to get us.  I have to be honest… I really didn’t like riding the bus.  I’m not sure what it was about it but it just wasn’t that much fun after we got past elementary school.

But because of other event in my life, I was able to start catching a ride to school with my cousin.  She got to park in the same parking lot as the buses because she was on a half day of school and then went to work.  This meant I had to figure out another way home.  Well, for a while the solution was to walk. That was quite a hike but I really didn’t mind it too much.

But finally I got my license and was able to start driving!  Now that was the best!  It was pretty funny though.  You could almost set your watch to the second as to what time everyone was going to arrive.  And while there weren’t assigned parking spaces, there might as well have been because every always seemed to park in pretty much the same place every day.

We drove all kinds of cars back then from the family station wagon to the latest TransAm or Fire Bird… and I guess we still do today but it’s funny how some people’s cars stick in your mind like Larry Turner’s yellow Celica ST or Eddie Meekin’s Camaro (that was a ’69 wasn’t it Eddie?).

While arriving was fairly orderly and spread out, leaving was an all together different story.  The light at Hughes Blvd would hold up traffic forever it felt like.  And some days I would just have to swing right out of the parking lot on Oak Stump Rd and come back out Trinkaloe Rd to Hughes.  That was never quicker… it was moving… and I was all about moving!

I can imagine that there will be some familiarities to all of this on the night of October 12th at the Home Coming game…
