Our Friday Night Lights

There was something about it.  I loved getting out of the car with a chill in the air.  You could sense the excitement as everyone else was getting out of their cars too and heading across the parking lot.  The bright lights for the field were lighting up the night sky for miles around.  The smell of cigarette smoke filled the air and in the distance you could hear the band ever so faintly as they were warming up.

We would yell across the parking lot at our friends as if we hadn..

Dance with me....

There is nothing that stirs more emotions in the heart of a high schooler than the simple 4 letter word P-R-O-M.  Those emotions can be of total excitement, dread or even shear terror.  Myself I was more toward the back end of that spectrum myself.  I’m not much of a dancer, but hopefully I’m not so bad that you remember seeing me at our senior prom.  But I do seem to remember a couple of things about those particular events that I thought I would mention.

First, in our junior ye...

Here's to them.....

There were days when I was incorrigible ... and then there were the days that I just didn't seem to care at all... yet, they showed up every day doing the best they could to encourage and inspire me. Some how they managed to tolerate it. And to my amazement, they actually succeeded in a lot of cases. In spite of my lack of enthusiasm so much of what they did has stuck with me all of these years... and so here's to them...

Mrs s Barclift, Flood, Boswell and Ms. Finch.. for all of the...

Travelling around the town....

When we first got to Northeastern, there were no athletic facilities on campus at all.  We would gather on Friday nights down at Memorial Stadium behind Sheep-Harney for football games... if we wanted to get to the baseball field, we had to walk on a road cut through the swamp over th Central Elementary School.  Softball and Tennis were played on the fields and courts over behind the Boys Club.  Those of us that ran track had to travel to our meets.  Everything was on the road... which we ac...

The Absolute Truth.. well, maybe...

Yeah, we were robbed.. I said it.  We all know it was true.  I don't care what anyone says, I saw them all and I know that ours was the best by far.  You know what I'm talking about... the hall decorating for HomeComing.

In our sophomore year, none of us had our drivers license but yet we stil managed to get the stuff we need to decorate... thanks to my sister... I rememeber posting pictures of the football players in the middle of the gears of "the big green machine".... how creative was th...

The Music of our Lives!

We are the most fortunate ones…. Yeah everyone talks about our parents being The greatest generation because of what the accomplished during World War II and the post war growth.  And I would never want to take that away from them, but… they didn’t have OUR music!

I have thought about this a lot and I can’t come up with a single point in time when there was such a diverse and rich choice in music… we had great pop tunes (you had to love the Bay City Rollers “Saturday Night” and...

A 50,000 foot view... but we are coming in for a closer look very soon...

Greetings my Eagle Friends!  For those of you new to reading my ramblings, I want to take a moment and explain what you are going to read... or hear.  See there are quite often songs associated with my thoughts so be sure and check out the songs here too.  They will change often with the blog.

As Beverly and I have been talking and assembling this site my mind has just been racing.  Filled with memories of all of the schools (Sheep-Harney, Central Elementary, Pasquotank Elementary, PW Moore,...

And this is how it began...

It was September 1974... Eric Clapton's "I Shot the Sheriff" was number one on the bill board charts as we pulled into the parking lots at NHS for the first time.  All of our band friends, cheerleader and football buddies had already been hanging around the school some in preparation for the coming football season but for the rest of us this was brand new!

There were halls that seemed to go everywhere.. and they all looked the same (with those center courtyards that we never went out into)......
