Celeste Spivey Sawyer, 91, a resident of Springmoor Retirement Community, died August 7, 2012. Mrs. Sawyer was the wife of the late Byron B. Sawyer and the daughter of the late Walter H. Spivey and Gay H. Spivey. Mrs. Sawyer was a 1941 graduate of Woman's College (now UNC-Greensboro). She lived in Elizabeth City, NC for more than sixty years where she was a devoted wife, mother, schoolteacher, church member and volunteer. She taught in the Camden and Pasquotank County school systems for over thirty-one years. Following the death of her husband in 1979, she enjoyed spending time with her many friends and volunteering regularly at First United Methodist Church and the Museum of the Albemarle. She was avid pianist, bridge player and cook and loved to share in those activities with her families and friends. Mrs. Sawyer moved to Springmoor in 2005 where she made many new friends, participated in many events of the community and became a member of Hayes Barton United Methodist Church. Retirement offered Mrs. Sawyer more time with her children and grandchildren. Her children, grandchildren and, most recently, great-grandchildren were a constant source of delight as she was for them.
A son, Charles Sawyer, and his wife, Mary, of Raleigh and a daughter, Ann Rushing and her husband, Steve, of Decatur, Georgia, survive Mrs. Sawyer. Additionally, Mrs. Sawyer is survived by four grandchildren, Amanda Sawyer Holliday of Chapel Hill, Byron Rushing of Atlanta, Clark Rushing of Greenbelt, MD and Elizabeth Rushing of Atlanta. Great grandchildren include Hannah Holliday, Jackson Rushing and Carter Rushing.
Her funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, August 10, 2012, at Twiford's Memorial Chapel in Elizabeth City with burial following at New Hollywood Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at Springmoor Retirement Community in Raleigh at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 15, 2012. The family wishes to express their appreciation to the staff of Springmoor, especially the RNs, LPNs and CNAs of the Stewart Health Center, for their kind and loving care during the past 3 years.

Scott Chatoney Callaway, age 93, of 1322 Horner Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Sunday, May 3, 2009 at his residence. Mr. Callaway was the son of the late Fountain Gallatin Callaway and Fannye Mary Chatoney Callaway and the husband of Bernice Naylor Callaway of the residence. They were married April 3, 1942. Besides his wife he is survived by three sons, Clark Naylor Callaway and wife Debbie of Beaufort, NC, Scott Callaway, II, of Vancouver Island, Canada, and William ‘Bill’ Fountain Callaway and wife Melodye of Wanchese, NC; three sisters, Frances Wilson of Brandon, MS, Lillie James of Huntsville, AL, and Sue Ward of Grenada, MS; five grandchildren, Lillie Bernice Callaway and William ‘Buddy’ Thomas Callaway both of Wanchese, NC, Christopher Callaway and wife Caroline of Cincinnati, OH, Amber Keeter and Candi Keeter both of Beaufort, NC; two great grandsons, Ayden Callaway and Logan Callaway of Cincinnati, OH; sister-in-law, Barbara Callaway of McGee, MS; and several nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by a daughter Joy Bernice Callaway, a sister Mary Callaway Bridges, and a brother Charles Allison Callaway.
Funeral services will be Thursday, May 7, 2009 at 2:00 pm at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mike Frese officiating. Burial will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7:00 to 8:30 pm Wednesday and at other times at the residence. Memorial donations may be made to a church or a charity of one’s choice. Paul Lawrence Winslow Jr., 74, of 1319 Weeksville Rd., Elizabeth City, passed away on Thursday, May 10, 2012 at Winslow Memorial Nursing Home. Funeral services for Mr. Winslow will be held Tuesday, May 15, 2012 at noon at Union Chapel Baptist Church with Rev. Frederick Godfrey officiating and delivering the eulogy. Burial will follow in Westlawn Memorial Park. Viewing will take place at the funeral home on Monday from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. The family will receive friends at the residence of the deceased. Mr. Winslow leaves to cherish his memories, his loving wife, Sarah C. Winslow; two sons, Paul L. Winslow III (Scottie) of Melbourne, Fla. and Troy J. Winslow (Sabrina) of Charleston, S.C.; one sister, Penny W. Felton of Mt. Vernon, N.Y.; one brother, James Lee Winslow (Johnnie) of Alexandria, Va.; and three grandchildren. Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Paul L. Winslow Sr. and Lessie Winslow; and two brothers, Charles and William Earl Winslow.
